Things Producers May Not Tell You

“I shop for the most lenient certifying agency.”

Third-party certifiers in the sustainability and organics areas are joining an ever more crowded field by the day. (In contrast, there are only two major global biodynamic certifiers.) To the consumer, an official logo gives legitimacy, but not all entities are created equal.

And a corollary to the above: “I greenwash”

I tout sustainability but I do the absolute minimum. Sustainability is a marketing tool, not a commitment.

Farming organically/biodynamically involves backbreaking work. It’s not all romance.

The plus side: Cutting out agrochemicals reduces breathing and other systemic problems for your workers. The downside: Farming organically may mean more physical injuries (carrying a 44-pound/20 kilo load of homeopathic plant food on your back takes some doing)

A caring producer should invest in sprayers and small tractors to reduce the risk of physical injuries.
